Conventional wisdom teaches us to look within, to ignore what other people are doing, and plow our own furrows. And yet most of us at one time or another have found ourselves scrutinizing another’s apparently successful life, and wondering whether our own measures up. Most grin with recognition at that homily, attributed to Ghengis Khan, Gore Vidal and others, that “it is not enough that I succeed—others must fail.” It is hardly virtuous, but is it true that our own achievements feel so much more satisfying if we can compare them to someone else’s failure? Philippa and I conduct an experiment.

Philippa writes a monthly agony aunt column in a British magazine, a job she really loves. As far as she is aware, there was no other candidate for this job. So we pretend I had pitched for the job, just to see how it feels:
